The Company - Background

The Company is a leading UK manufacturer of cultivation equipment and supplier of seed drills. They have an unmatched capability for introducing innovative technical features into their products, which deliver productivity for the end user. Our client exports complete machines and agricultural systems to Europe and further afield. Plans are in the pipeline to expand exports into new markets, to match the increasing sophistication of local agricultural methods.

The Company has a well-earned reputation and respected brand name, developed over 25 years in the UK, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Africa and the Middle East.

The ambitious growth plans for this ca. £15m turnover company include launching a new product range in 2007 and increasing sales by 50% in the short term.

Employing ca. 60 people at its East Midlands factory, operations include preparation, painting, and assembly, incorporating components and sub-assemblies, also the marketing of complete machines produced in other countries. There are currently plans to capitalise on new overseas multi-sourcing opportunities, to improve the competitiveness and quality of the product range.

The Company now requires an experienced Operations Manager to co-ordinate the whole range of manufacturing and assembly activities in the UK and Europe. This is a competitive market, so key priority aspects of the Operations Manager role are to improve operational efficiencies, quality and supply chain performance of the business.

The Role

The Operations Manager will need to quickly become an integral part of the Senior Management Team. The job will include responsibilities for:-

  • Co-ordinating all Company manufacturing activities both in the UK and overseas.
  • Supplying on time delivery of machines and spare parts.

  • Liaising with Design, Engineering, Marketing, Purchasing and Finance to ensure cost effective introduction of new products.
  • Overseeing a major purchasing initiative on standard components.
  • Overall responsibility for Health and Safety throughout the Company.
  • Improving quality systems throughout the Company.

The Company plans to launch a major new product range in late 2007. The Operations Manager will play a major part in laying down efficient methods of producing this range.

Specifically, the short term objectives for the new Operations Manager will be:-

  • More efficient assembly, with a target reduction of 15% on current standard times.
  • A high quality flow of components from sub-contractors, and reduce work in progress stock from 6 weeks to 2 weeks.
  • To oversee a major purchasing initiative to improve gross margin, as a result of quality of supply as much as price.
