Interim Production Manager - Scope, Responsibilities

The interim production manager role involves coordination and management of the resources and activities required to deliver the company's order book. The interim production manager's responsibilities will usually include:

  • production scheduling
  • staffing, personnel development / training
  • equipment operation and maintenance
  • parts stocking and kitting, and
  • co-ordination of production with other departments

Quality control and inventory control, including demand/supply chain and logistics, will normally be handled by other teams within the plant. The interim production manager will be expected to liaise closely with these teams, co-ordinating with the team managers on a regular basis. The interim production manager may report to a general/operations manager, or to a member of the board of management.

The interim production manager will normally carry out the planning, organisation, direction and control of production operations or the production department within the company. He/she will develop and implement plans for the efficient use of materials, labour and equipment to meet production targets and will plan and manage the departmental budget.

The interim production manager will be responsible for development of production schedules and maintenance of inventory of raw materials and finished products, also for planning and implementation of changes to machinery and equipment, production systems and methods of working and development of production reporting procedures. He/she will also be responsible for the training of employees in the use of new equipment and production techniques.
