Interim Manufacturing Manager - Scope, Responsibilities
The interim manufacturing manager role involves coordination and management of the resources and activities required to deliver the company's order book. The interim manufacturing manager's responsibilities will include production scheduling, staffing, equipment operation and maintenance, quality control, inventory control and co-ordination of production with other departments.
Quality control and inventory control, including demand/supply chain and logistics, may be handled by separate teams within the plant, depending on the nature of the operation, the customer base and the product configuration. The manufacturing manager may head up these teams or co-ordinate with the team managers. The manufacturing manager may report to a general/operations manager, or to a member of the board of management.
The interim manufacturing manager will normally carry out the planning, organisation, direction and control of manufacturing operations or the production department within the company. He/she will develop and implement plans for the efficient use of materials, labour and equipment to meet production targets and plan and manage the departmental budget.
The interim manufacturing manager will be responsible for development of production schedules and maintenance of inventory of raw materials and finished products, also for planning and implementation of changes to machinery and equipment, production systems and methods of working, direction of quality control inspection systems and development of production reporting procedures.
He/she will be responsible for development of equipment maintenance schedules and recommendations for the replacement of machines and training of employees in the use of new equipment and production techniques.

Interim Manufacturing Manager - Skills / Qualifications
The interim manufacturing manager should demonstrate good leadership, interpersonal and communication skills and be a decisive person who commands respect. He/she must have a mature and responsible outlook and dependable nature and be diplomatic but firm. The interim manufacturing manager should be presentable to clients and senior management of organisations and capable of dedicated ongoing performance. The interim manufacturing manager should be able to demonstrate a track record of achievement at a senior level, of managing a business of the size and sales performance consistent with the assignment.
Completion of a university qualification or equivalent in engineering or business administration is usually required, sometimes with chartered engineer status. Five to ten years' of supervisory experience in the nominated manufacturing or allied sector, will be required, ideally with specific expertise in the operation of the equipment and techniques used in the client's industry.
