Interim Engineering Manager - Scope, Responsibilities

The interim engineering manager role covers a number of different engineering functions within industry, including design/development, projects and maintenance.

The interim engineering manager should have a sound background in the design and manufacture of components / systems and assemblies, with experience of product and process applications.

A flair for design will be a necessary attribute, to generate new ideas and bring them to fruition, linking together initial concept, preliminary design, prototypes, through to design for manufacture and into full production, will be necessary attributes. The interim engineering manager should also have a detailed knowledge of legislation, industry codes of practice and technologies for the industry concerned.

Within a manufacturing environment, the interim engineering manager will be expected to direct and coordinate the activities of the engineering department, design new products, modify existing designs, improve production techniques and develop test procedures.

Within a service or projects oriented environment, the interim engineering manager may direct or support the implementation of field-based products and systems and co-ordinate the activities performed by field staff.

The project engineering manager is acting traditionally in a design / engineering management capacity to oversee the preparation of detailed plant and equipment designs, including drawings, technical specifications, manuals etc

The maintenance engineering manager is responsible for providing engineering support, including operational production maintenance advice and guidance in all disciplines. The job typically involves management of maintenance planning, scheduling, long-term maintenance certification and inspection activities, including condition monitoring and major overhauls.

Interim Engineering Manager - Qualifications

The interim engineering manager is likely to be an HNC/HND or a degree qualified engineer with emphasis on design and engineering, typically possessing 5 years' minimum postgraduate experience in an engineering environment, with strong design / development, engineering, technical management and project management expertise. For some assignments, chartered engineer status may be desirable.
