Interim Supply Chain Manager develops Procurement Process for Forgings
When a leading Birmingham fork lift truck manufacturing company wanted to improve its cost base, it commissioned Redmayne to appoint an interim supply chain manager to review its strategy for the procurement of forged gear train components from Poland. Redmayne had previous experience of dealing with Polish suppliers and a number of contacts had already been established with suitable forging companies and components machining companies. Data was collected for component configurations, material specification, machining requirements, heat treatment specification and finished material manufacturing requirements, so that enquiries could be prepared.
Sourcing and Supply Contract
Our supply chain manager contacted a number of Polish forges and issued enquiries for the procurement of forged blanks for gear manufacturing. The operations of two of the preferred manufacturing concerns were audited to ensure compliance with our quality, delivery and pricing targets. After an initial trial delivery of forgings, a further contract was negotiated with the selected Polish manufacturing company, to provide machined gear blanks to the customer specification. The additional contract was closely expedited to maintain a succession of shipments to meet the on-going production schedule. In spite of some early communications difficulties and logistics issues, an effective supply chain was established with the Polish company, which led to significant cost savings for the Birmingham based end user.
