Final Inspection Facility for Engine Bearings

Our client company had a short-term containment need to ensure that no defective products reached the customer. They knew what they had to do to improve their processes, but needed time to achieve it.

The task for our interim quality manager was to create, establish, staff and run a final inspection facility, to process 60,000 parts per day.

Our interim quality manager specified inspection benches and lighting to a high specification for procurement by the client. The definitions of acceptable and unacceptable parts had to be created and formalised, then all the staff had to be trained in these acceptance standards.

Photographic records of the reference samples were created. Data collection and analysis were of critical importance to the client, since this data was used to pinpoint the underlying problems; and to identify which inspectors required more training, or were even unsuitable for the task.

Success was achieved within 16 weeks, when the controlled shipping requirement was removed. The client now has an established reference quality manual of acceptable / unacceptable defects.
