Interim Project Management, Health & Safety
Applicable Regulations
Construction or installation projects of longer duration than 30 days, or more than 500 man days of construction work, are notifiable under the terms of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM Regulations), as amended by the Construction (Design and Management) (Amendment) Regulations 2000.
Appointments of Planning Supervisor and Principal Contractor
Under Regulation 6 of the CDM Regulations, every client shall appoint a Planning Supervisor and a Principal Contractor, in respect of each project.
- The Planning Supervisor should be appointed as soon as practicable and at a sufficiently early stage to help the client to fulfil the duties specified in the CDM Regulations.
- The most critical part of the Planning Supervisor role is to ensure the health and safety plan is prepared before arrangements for carrying out or managing the construction work are completed.
- The Principal Contractor should be appointed as soon as practicable. Critical to the timing of the appointment of the principal contractor is the need to develop a compliant health and safety plan, before the construction phase commences.
For details of your legal health and safety obligations as they may apply to your next project, please refer to the Regulations and take professional advice, as appropriate.
